Jubilate Deo

| | Comments (3)

The St. Cecilia Schola is very pleased to distribute Jubilate Deo in a printable booklet (6 pages) for use by scholas and parishes. It was issued by the order of Paul VI in 1974 by the Sacred Congregation for Divine Worship. It was to be distributed and reproduced "free of charge," according to the letter, which also said: "Those who are tying to improve the quality of congregational singing cannot refuse to Gregorian chant the place which is due to it."

Very nice. And a nice production job.

This collection contains various parts of the Mass, while the original Jubilate Deo, about four times as long, has a number of antiphons and other chants not included here. The chant notation book reproduced from the Typis Polyglottis Vaticanis edition by the Daughters of St. Paul does not carry a copyright (hint, hint), and I belong to The Adoremus Hymnal camp as far as using chant notation for educational purposes for congregational parts of the Mass likely to be repeated often. On the other hand, the G.I.A. modern notation version, with English translations of the texts, is copyright, and so this is where the St. Cecilia Schola has stepped up to the plate.

If I may indulge myself by telling a story: When I was in college, the Daughters of St. Paul came to campus to have a book sale. When one of the sisters saw that I was buying chant, she said, "What good taste you have!" And the other responded, "What good taste we have!"

Great. Someone email me the Vatican original or the reprinted version that is not under copyright and we'll get it right up online. If you can't scan it, write me for an address to send a photocopy.

It's up in 2 formats, one in booklet pagination and one just normal. We have this blog to thank for helping the hard copy find the server space.
